3 Dogs Take Top Obedience Prizes
November 27, 1989
VILLA PARK — Any breed of dog could compete for the title of best-trained hound in the land, but it was a golden retriever and two border collies who took the prizes Sunday at the 1989 Gaines U.S. Dog Obedience Classic. For three days, 190 dogs representing 33 breeds and 25 states plus Canada leaped over hurdles, identified objects by scent, heeled, sat and lay down on command at the Classic, the World Series of dog obedience.A 4-year-old golden retriever named Ruby was proclaimed the best behaved and best trained dog when the show ended Sunday in Villa Park. Ruby, piloted by her owner, Laurie Rubenfeld of Monsey, N.Y., also won the Classic last year.Winner of the open class was Trivet, piloted by Janice DeMello of Somerset, Mass. Top winner in novice was Rival, piloted by Jeanine Rendon of Stockton, Calif. Trivet and Rival are 3-year-old border collies. The show was sponsored by Gaines dog foods of Quaker Oats and organized by the Illini Obedience Association. The dogs were the cream of the crop of more than 100,000 entries at more than 4,000 dog shows nationwide, according to Barbara Goodman, a Chicagoan who helped start the Classic 14 years ago.
I had the good fortune of training with Laurie Rubenfeld, and I cannot say enough great things about her. As an instructor she is extremely knowledgeable and generous with her time and expertise, and a positive, hands-on coach and mentor. Laurie’s unique approach to teaching without using fear or pain compliance, ensures positive results, a confident dog and a life-long rewarding relationship with your companion. I highly recommend Laurie, and her training methods, whether for specific issues or for general obedience. Thanks to Laurie and the techniques she taught me, my dog not only had a successful show career, he was also a respected canine good citizen, registered therapy dog, and a beloved member of our family. I cannot say enough about the way Laurie helped my Labrador Retriever, Emmett and I achieve our goal of getting our AKC Utility Dog title this year. Not only that, but we started out in Novice A, both of us inexperienced and having no idea how far this journey would take us. It has been an exciting journey and we are still not finished. Not long after achieving Emmett’s Utility Dog title, we earned his Versatility title in three straight trials finishing in the ribbons each time. I had thought that Versatility would be the “icing on the cake” but we now have two legs towards a Utility Dog Excellent title and there is a good possibility that we will achieve that title this coming year. All of our titles were won with good scores and most of the time with placement ribbons. This was not without a lot of effort and hard work but also with kindness and understanding what Emmett needed from me. With Laurie’s help and expertise we were able to accomplish the goals I had set for us and more. I am so grateful for all she has done to help us. Thank you, Laurie!!! Jacqui Hartranft

I have known Laurie for a number of years and have watched her patiently work with a number of breeds. It didn’t take me long to realize that she has the ability to tailor a training program specifically for each dog/handler team. One of her greatest assets is the infinite amount of patience and understanding that she gives to everyone in helping them reach their goals. Joanne S.
